About Horizon House
Horizon House is a nonprofit Life Plan Community founded in 1961 by Myrtle Edwards, the legendary Seattle activist who believed retirement shouldn’t mean retreating from the world. That spirit lives today through residents who shape their own community, pursue their passions, and prove that independent thinking doesn’t have an expiration date.
As a Life Plan Community, Horizon House offers Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Support—all under one roof. You’ll also find an 800+ piece world-class art collection. Inclusive spiritual care for all backgrounds. Easy access to Seattle’s museums, healthcare, and cultural attractions. And a resident-led governance structure where neighbors run more than 60 committees and programs—curating exhibitions, hosting political forums, leading environmental initiatives, and creating the intellectual life that has helped draw some of Seattle’s most inspired independent thinkers.
If you value your independence, trust your own judgment, and want a community that respects both, you’re in the right place.
Life That’s Anything but Ordinary.
There’s just something about this place that attracts people who never stop being curious—and it shows. Our residents lead more than 60 clubs, programs and activities—from art galleries and lecture series to fitness classes and political forums. Our First Hill location puts you at the center of Seattle’s cultural heartbeat, with museums, theaters, parks, and renowned dining just steps from your door. Inside, you’ll find beautifully appointed spaces filled with world-class artwork, thoughtfully designed amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
